September 23, 2003 This semester had to be different; I vowed not to get into meaningless, boring, forced friendships. I wanted to know people who didn’t get excited over new fabric prints in the market, didn’t try desperately to get a guys attention and then dismiss him for being a playboy and guys who only came to display car keys, cigarette packs, shades, mobiles. I needed a plan and the perfect strategy would be to…enter and exit the class with the teacher. For the minutes when the attendance is taken and people make small talk, bury your head in a book and look extremely engrossed. The book will also serve as your shield when the teacher goes into details about their so cool family and job. I admit last two semesters I was a little eager to know a few people…looking for potential friends but I was extremely disappointed, continuously annoyed and told weird stories just to scare them off. My plan failed miserably, in 5 days I made 5 NEW ‘friends’, 5 ‘friends’ who get to class early to save a seat for me and then try to get 5 seats in the same row so we can all sit together like a big happy family one short of a dog. Yesterday this girl told me that her first impression of me was someone very arrogant with don’t-try-to-talk-to-me-i-will-kill-you looks. And she STILL wants to sit next to me!!! I hate the small talk, getting to know people who bore you to death. I detest repeating the name of my last university so they try to pronounce it six times and ask me if I was in Hong Kong…but oh no I was in an Australian Univ DUBAI campus. I’m bored of telling them how I find the teachers/courses/campus and the over dressed slut at the back. Once again I’m stuck in the same cycle but I can feel my bitchy claws emerging and I will no longer smile sweetly when I really feel like yawning, I will tell weird, crazy, nonsensical stories about my past and I will walk away and say, “You know what I don’t want to sit here…I’ll just grab a seat at the back…far, far away from you”.
